Understanding how COVID-19 virus transmits
COVID-19 virus is primarily transmitted between people through respiratory droplets and contact routes. It means the respiratory droplets can spread when people interacting in close contact (within 1 meter), for example coughing, sneezing and speaking.
Transmission may also occur through infected surfaces in the immediate environment around the infected person. Therefore, transmission of the COVID-19 virus can occur by direct contact with infected people and indirect contact with surfaces in the immediate environment or with objects used on the infected person.
Why is wearing face masks/cloth cover a recommended measure to the public?
However, in some public settings where social distancing measure is hard to practice (i.e. grocery stores), the US Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends wearing cloth face coverings as an additional and voluntary public health measure in slowing down the spread of virus.
Why is the public encouraged to use reusable mask/cloth cover?
The CDC and Singapore government have both recommended the use of cloth coverings and reusable mask respectively. This measure if to ensure critical supplies such as surgical masks are reserved for the healthcare workers and other medical first responders.
