What is G6PD deficiency ?

G6PD deficiency is the most common form of hereditary enzyme deficiency. G6PD is a protein in the red blood cells that helps them work normally.


Is there a test for G6PD deficiency?

In Malaysia, the cord blood screening test for newborns includes the test for G6PD. Adults can consult doctors for a simple blood test.


Why do people with G6PD deficiency should avoid fava beans?

Certain medicines or chemicals can destroy read blood cells in people with G6PD deficiency. You must notify your healthcare providers before taking any medication. Fava beans and moth balls are known to cause hemolysis of red blood cells.


Any treatment need?

People with G6PD deficiency do not require any treatment on a normal day. However, once you notice any hemolytic symptoms such as : yellowing of the skin , pale or dark urine, you must immediately to seek medical treatment.
